The Gas Work on This Run

Gas jobs come in three broad kinds, and all three are licensed work:

Appliances

Cooktops, ovens, BBQs, pool heaters and hot water units, fitted, connected and commissioned.

Pipework

New gas runs, extensions for renovations, and replacing old fittings that have failed a test.

Faults

Leak detection with a gas detector, repairs, and pressure testing before anything gets turned back on.

The two biggest have their own pages, listed further down.

How Do You Know Old Fittings Need Attention?

The housing answers most of this. The pre-1940 cottages and Federation weatherboards on these blocks were connected in eras with different standards, and many still run old fittings that should be inspected, usually when a renovation opens the walls. A fitting can look sound and still fail a pressure test.

The signs to act on:

  • A faint gas smell near the meter, the stove or a heater, worse on still nights.
  • A yellow or orange flame on a cooktop that should burn blue.
  • An appliance that cuts out, or a heater that smells of fumes while running.
  • Any fitting disturbed during renovation work, even if it seemed fine before.

A smell you can locate is a phone call today, not next week.

Lambton's Old Gas Lines and What They Mean

A coal township keeps its old connections. St John's Primary School on Dickinson Street dates to 1883, and the cottages in the streets around it come from the same pre-1940 era, with gas runs fitted long before modern compliance rules existed.

That matters in two ways. A renovation that opens walls is the smart moment to test and upgrade an old line, and the worst moment to leave it unchecked. An appliance swap is not always a straight swap either, because the existing pipework has to pass a test before a new unit gets connected.

We check that first, quote what it needs, and you see the figure before work starts.

How a Gas Job Runs

From the first call to the finished paperwork:

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Test, fit, check

The gas fitter pressure-tests the line, fits or repairs the appliance, and checks every joint with a gas detector before anything is lit.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Drives the Price of Gas Work?

"Not only all of that but the job came in right on quote." Steve

So the price you say yes to is the price you pay, whatever the old pipework turns out to be like once the wall is open. What moves that figure:

  • The pipework A new run costs more than connecting to an existing tested line.
  • The appliance Hooking up a cooktop near an existing line takes far less time than a pool heater at the end of a long new run.
  • The access Lines under floors or through old masonry take longer to reach and to test.
  • The hour After-hours work is quoted differently, and you are told that up front.

Steve saw the benefit of this from the other side of a quote:

Lambton Gas Fitting Services

Gas appliance installation

Connecting and commissioning cooktops, ovens, BBQ points and pool heaters, with the supply line tested or extended where needed. See gas appliance installation.

Gas leak detection

For a smell, a failed test or a worn fitting, the gas detector finds the fault and a licensed repair fixes it. See gas leak repairs for what to do first.

Where a Gas Job Stops Being Ours

When we're not the right call: the meter and the public supply main belong to the gas network, so a fault there is theirs to fix. If a gas heater's fan or ignition board has failed, that part of the job needs an electrician.

Questions People Ask About Gas Work

What should we do if we smell gas inside the house?

Open doors and windows, get everyone outside, and do not touch light switches or anything electrical. Ring the gas network's emergency line from a safe distance, then call us about finding and repairing the leak once the immediate danger is handled.

Can you install a gas cooktop in an older Lambton cottage?

Yes. Many older cottages around Elder Street already have a gas run in the kitchen, and where one does not exist we quote the new line as part of the install. The appliance, the pipework and the compliance all come from the one licensed job.

Do the old gas fittings in Lambton homes have to be replaced?

Not automatically. A licensed gas fitter tests the line and the connections first, and replacement is only quoted where the test or the inspection shows a problem. Renovations are the usual trigger, since walls and floors are open anyway.

Is gas hot water work part of this run?

Yes. The same licensed team installs and repairs gas storage and continuous-flow hot water, and our hot water pages explain how to choose between them for an older house.
