What a Colliery Suburb Does to Its Pipes

Waratah started as its own coal-mining municipality in 1871, and the cottages and Federation homes from those years still stand around the station and the park. The plumbing under them tells the same story.

Clay drains under old gardens

The drains under the coal-era cottages are earthenware, and a century in the ground has left that pipe brittle. The mature trees around Waratah Park send roots into those old joints, so a drain that blocks over and over on these blocks is usually a cracked line, not a clog.

Steel supply pipe from the same era

Some of the oldest houses near the railway still draw water through galvanised steel pipe laid when the suburb was new. It rusts from the inside and strangles the flow, so taps gone weak all at once usually point to the supply line, not the fixtures.

Newer infill beside the old

Since the early 2000s, units and townhouses have gone in near the shopping village on Turton Road. They lean on flexi hoses and drainage runs shared between homes, which fail differently from the clay under the cottages.

Storage units at the end

The older detached houses here commonly run storage hot water units that should have been retired years ago, and a failure usually arrives without much warning. We match the new unit to the household and its hot water use before anything is quoted.

Questions From the Cottage Streets

Do you clear the old clay sewers in the Waratah cottage streets?

Yes. The old sewers on the station side of the suburb are clay, and we clear them with a jetter, then show you the camera footage of the open line before we pack up. If the pipe has cracked right through, you get a price for the repair before anything more is done.

Do you work on the newer units near Turton Road?

Yes. The units and townhouses closer to the village get the same service as any cottage, drains and hot water included, and body corporate bookings are welcome.
