A coal town from 1889

New Lambton grew around the pit, and the older blocks carry Federation-era houses and Californian bungalows as good as any in the country, all plumbed when clay drains and galvanised supply were the standard.

Galvanised that has had its day

Houses from the township's early decades often still run steel supply pipe corroded from the inside, which chokes the flow and tinges the water, so a weak shower is often the pipe, not the fixture.
